Terms of Use
Effective
Summary
- Synapse is free, open-source software under the Apache-2.0 licence, provided as is, with no warranty.
- AI makes mistakes. You're responsible for what you ask your Bots to do and for the actions you approve.
- Your API keys, your costs and your providers' terms are yours to manage.
- Use the site and the feedback system fairly: no abuse, no attacks.
Acceptance
These terms cover this website, the feedback system, and your use of the Synapse app as we distribute it. "We" and "us" mean the Synapse open-source project. By using them, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.
The Synapse source code is also covered by its open-source licence. If these terms and the licence ever disagree about the code, the licence wins.
Open source licence
Synapse is open source under the Apache License 2.0. You can use, copy, change and share it under that licence. Versions up to 0.1.2 were released under the MIT licence and stay under it.
As the licence says, Synapse is provided "AS IS", without warranties or conditions of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of title, non-infringement, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. You're responsible for deciding whether it's right for you and for the risks of using it.
And as the licence also says, unless the law requires otherwise, no contributor is liable to you for damages of any kind arising from the licence or from using or being unable to use Synapse, including lost data, lost work, computer failure or any other loss, even if told such damage was possible.
AI output and your Bots
- Your Bots are powered by AI models. What they say, write, code or do can be wrong, incomplete or unexpected.
- Review their work before you rely on it, especially code, messages sent in your name, and anything to do with money, health, law or safety.
- You're responsible for what you ask your Bots to do, and for every action you approve, including with Always allow or when you turn approvals off.
- Keep backups of anything important. Bots can change or delete files they're allowed to reach.
Your keys, costs and provider terms
Synapse uses your own API key with the AI provider you choose, which today is Anthropic. You're responsible for:
- keeping your keys safe;
- everything your provider charges you, including charges from your Bots' work. Budgets in the app help, but they aren't a guarantee;
- following your provider's terms and usage policies, such as Anthropic's Commercial Terms and Usage Policy.
Third-party services
Synapse works with services we don't run, such as your AI provider, OrbStack, GitHub, Google, Composio, Slack, and any tool server or website your Bots use. Your use of them is under their own terms and privacy policies. We aren't responsible for them, for their availability, or for what they do with your data.
Acceptable use
Don't use Synapse, this website or the feedback system to:
- break the law or anyone's rights;
- harass, threaten or abuse anyone, including us;
- send spam, malware or content meant to trick an AI into doing something harmful;
- attack, overload, probe or get around the security or limits of this website or the feedback system, or try to read anyone else's feedback.
To report a security issue in good faith, follow SECURITY.md.
Feedback
Feedback you send may be used to improve Synapse. You give us a free, worldwide, perpetual and irrevocable licence to use, copy, change and build on it for that, including in the open-source code, without owing you anything. We don't have to use it, and we won't publish your private feedback in a way that identifies you. How we handle it is in the Privacy Policy.
Shared Bots
Bots shared through links come from other people. A Bot's instructions and skills decide what it tries to do. Read a shared Bot before you add it, and check what it asks to do. We don't vouch for Bots made by others, and you add them at your own risk.
Trademarks and endorsement
Synapse is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Anthropic or any other AI provider or service it works with. Claude and Anthropic are trademarks of Anthropic. Other names and logos belong to their owners.
The Apache licence doesn't cover the Synapse name or the Synapse Bot logo and icon. Our trademark policy explains what forks can and can't do with them.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Synapse project and its contributors aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, work, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of Synapse, this website or the feedback system, whatever the legal theory. Where liability can't be excluded, it's limited to the amount you paid us, which is nothing, since Synapse is free.
Some places don't allow some of these limits. There, they apply as far as the law allows, and nothing in these terms limits rights you have that can't be waived.
Indemnity
If someone makes a claim against the Synapse project or its contributors because of how you used Synapse or this website, or because you broke these terms or the law, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent it was caused by you.
Termination
We may limit or stop your access to this website or the feedback system if you break these terms or put them at risk. We may also change or shut down the website or the feedback system at any time. Your rights under the open-source licence to the copies of Synapse you have aren't affected.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws applicable to the Synapse maintainer, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you're a consumer, you also keep the protections of the laws where you live.
Changes
We may update these terms. We'll post the new version here with a new effective date, and every change is public on GitHub. If you keep using the website or the feedback system after a change, the new terms apply.
Severability
If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies, and that part is applied as far as the law allows. If we don't enforce a part of these terms, we haven't given up the right to.
